Going to College or University is not for everyone – but don’t worry! There are so many alternative options available to you.

Below are some options to consider.
Apprenticeships
The go to is usually a traditional apprenticeship such as electrician, carpentry, fabrication, car mechanic etc. However, there are a huge range of apprenticeships available in other areas now including: finance, IT, science, engineering, logistics, hotel management, accounting, and hairdressing the list is endless.
My motto with those who are considering an apprenticeship is that it is not just a plan if college doesn’t work out, it has to be your definite plan. Students have to work hard to secure an apprenticeship and work twice as hard during the apprenticeship compared to those in college. Lots of information available here with vacant apprenticeship positions advertised also.
Traineeships
A traineeship is an option for some. These are normally shorter in duration than the apprenticeship route. Lots of industry led opportunities available. See various options here or approach your local Education and Training Board for details.
Post Leaving Certificate Course (PLC)
Another option is a Post Leaving Certificate Course (PLC). The area you study will determine your employment opportunities thereafter. A popular option here is the world of media and television with well-known industry courses available here.
Other options include beauty therapy, hair dressing, child care and the tourism/leisure industry. Lots of options to review here.
Medical Training Programs
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training is an option to consider with lots of companies providing such training. Ensure the provider is PHECC accredited allowing you to register as an EMT upon completion of studies, work placements and exams. The course is a combination of theory and practical learning. Employment opportunities with private ambulances, on-site event medical services etc.
Others may choose the paramedic HSE training program. Details available to review here.
The Guards / Defences Forces
The guards or the defence forces are also popular choices with all details available here The Guards and Defence Forces
Agricultural Options
Teagasc provide a range of courses for those seeking a more outdoor role. Obviously there are options in agriculture but also horticulture, forestry and mechanisation to mention just a few. See here for all available options.
Employment
Another option, often seen as a ‘mad idea’, is to seek employment. Many will enter roles in hotel and tourism, retail, horticulture, administration, manufacturing and construction.
In some cases, but definitely not all, employees will receive on the job training and engage in short courses and progress to more senior roles. Some companies offer management training programmes to those showing potential and proactivity. Some will join an accountancy firm immediately after completing their leaving certificate and work towards qualifying as an accountant.
Get your CV in ship shape and check out local companies and job boards for vacancies.
Part Time Courses
There are an abundance of part time courses available with popular options in sports injury therapy, neuromuscular therapy, nutrition and alternative therapies.
The above summarises some of the options available to those who don’t want to go to college.
There is no right or wrong way to get your career started. Reflect on yourself, what are your priorities, what do you want your work life to look like. Do lots of research, ask questions, use your contacts, put yourself out there to seek work experience. Be proactive and don’t wait for these opportunities to be offered to you – seek them out and take responsibility for making your decisions as it is your life and your choice.
